The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Hokkaido University opened in November, 1990 after separating from the Department of Second Surgery. Dr. Keishu Yasuda was the first professor in the department. Hokkaido University School of Medicine was established in 1921. The Second Surgery Department was then opened in April, 1924 by Dr. Soichi Yanagi, who served as the first professor, followed by Dr. Yoshimasa Okuda, Saburo Sugie and Tatsuzo Tanabe (the second, third and fourth professors, respectively). Thereafter, the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery was newly established by Dr. Tanabe. Since Dr. Sugie joined, the department has been focused on clinical practice and research in cardiovascular surgery.
