Laboratory experience for medical students
Hands-on surgical experience for medical students
If you are not sure about your future specialty or if you are already interested in surgery, would you like to experience performing surgery on a swine heart?
It is difficult to learn surgery from a textbook. You can get a taste of the real thrill of surgery by touching and dissecting the heart and having a real hands-on surgery experience.

Even if you believe you understand something, there are things that you cannot fully grasp unless you actually experience them. It is usually difficult to apply the techniques you learned when you were a surgical assistant to a surgery where you yourself act as the primary surgeon. Simulation surgery using a pig heart is an excellent training method for a future surgeon. During actual surgery, you may not have time to ask any questions to senior physicians. With simulation surgery, you are able to ask questions until you completely understand.
Laboratory experience for nurses
Hands-on surgical experience for nurses in the surgery department
During cardiac surgery, we are competing with time. The main part of the surgery in particular is conducted while the heart function is halted. Although we can safely stop the heart for a much longer period of time than before due to the advancement of medical technology, it is best to minimize this period. During such a situation, it is difficult to have enough time to train nurses who are directly involved in the surgery.
Nurses can better understand the details of surgery as well as the surgeon’s demands by experiencing simulation surgery using a pig heart. We believe that we can provide better medical care to the patients by improving the communication among the cardiac surgery team members.
